Question:
It's time to upgrade your Oracle database?
Answer:
Oracle 11g remains a good, stable database platform. Many companies run just fine on their Oracle 11g database. Why should anyone upgrade?
The most compelling reason is that Oracle 11.2.0.4 has offered a one-year complimentary Extended Support since January 2015. This level of support, normally an additional cost option, provides most everything you're used to except Oracle will not validate the database with new Oracle products or third-party products. This free extension expires in January 2016, after which you can continue Extended Support for up to two years at an additional cost.
Customers using 11.2.0.3 can still use Extended Support, if they purchased it, but that version goes to Sustaining Support in August, 2015 with no option to renew. Sustaining Support provides no more updates, patches, or certifications. 11.2.0.2 and 11.2.0.1 are already on Sustaining Support. The older release cannot be directly upgraded to 12c. Direct upgrade requires customers to upgrade to a later 11g version, instead of 12c.
Okay, we're moving on from 11g, but what's new in 12c? Aside from all the benefits of being on Premier Support, there are a number of amazing new features in 12c.
Pluggable databases
Data tiering
Globally-distributed databases
Application continuity
